Chapter Ten

The day passes by slowly, despite the fact that I’d like for it to pass more quickly in order to get to nine o’clock when Grayson will arrive. I spend the day with Jovi playing in the yard, cleaning up some of the overgrown plants in the garden that have taken root in the grass. By the time I’m done, it’s past suppertime, and I feed Jovi and heat up a little something for myself. After that, my stomach is doing cartwheels and I almost wish I hadn’t eaten anything. I draw myself a bath to clean up and try to relax a little before the art exhibit.

I’m not sure if the water relaxes me, despite the bubbles and the soothing temperature. I dig under my fingernails to remove every speck of dirt, every remnant of paint, every iota of the afternoon. I try to lean back against the bath pillow that Taylor bought for me one Christmas and think about something calming and soothing, but all my head and my heart want to consider is the blue of Grayson’s eyes and the guilty pang in my chest I get when I think about him.

I relax for about three seconds, which might be a record for me outside of the complete distraction that comes with painting.

Half an hour later, I’m ready for Grayson’s arrival, but it’s still a bit early, so I find myself puttering around the kitchen, tidying up the countertops and wiping down the cupboards just for something to do. The feeling of anxiety is palpable, but there’s nothing I can figure out to do that will make it go away.

Other than wait for Grayson’s little black hatchback to arrive in my driveway.

Which it does, moments before nine o’clock.

The sun has disappeared into the dark, with little speckles of stars overhead that look like flickers of paint in the canvas of midnight blue. I’m just slipping on a pair of comfortable flats when there’s a tiny knock at the door, a shadowy shape of a man on the other side holding something in his left hand. Jovi runs down the hallway from where he was napping on my bed, barking his fool head off.

I slide one foot into a shoe and open the door to face Grayson, who is holding a small flower in a blue pot. He’s wearing a pair of chinos and a collared shirt, along with a broad smile that is so contagious I find myself grinning back as I hold Jovi by the collar so he doesn’t run into the yard.

Grayson reaches out his hand a bit, showing off the plant. “Brought you a little something. Supposed to be easy to take care of. At least, that’s what the woman at House ‘N Home said. I didn’t want to make your life more complicated, but…” Grayson trails off, his smile wavering just a touch, before he turns the conversation in a different direction. “Anyway, I was thinking a kitchen window might be nice.”

“I think you’re right.
